The Government of Guyana’s Re-migrant Policy was created to assist returning Guyanese with a seamless re-establishment of residence in Guyana, by facilitating the importation of household and personal effects and a motor vehicle for those deemed “qualifying re-migrants.” The determination of a “qualifying re-migrant” and “returning student” is decided by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, while the applicable concessions are facilitated by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) in accordance with Section 23 of the Customs Act 82:01.

Application Process:

The application process starts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and it entails an in-person preliminary interview followed by submission of your application and required documents. Please see attached documents highlighting the required documents that must be presented to the Remigration Unit. The application and the required original documents must be submitted for verification, along with two copies of those documents. The processing time for an application is 21 working days.

Guyana Revenue Authority:

Once you have been granted approval by the Honourable Minister, you are required to utilize the exemptions (which are determined by the Guyana Revenue Authority) within six (6) months of the date of that approval letter. Kindly note that you need to submit the detailed list of household and personal items you wish to bring to Guyana to the Guyana Revenue Authority and have it approved before any shipment is made. If you fail to utilise the exemptions within that time period, you would be required to submit a new application accompanied by a letter of explanation for the new application.
