Travel Guide
Welcome to Guyana

We are excited to welcome you to the Guyana Energy Conference, taking place in the heart of Georgetown, Guyana. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning guest, this travel guide provides essential information to ensure a seamless experience from your departure to your stay.

Safe travels!

By Air

Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) is the primary entry point for international travelers flying into Guyana. Located approximately 40 kilometers from the capital city of Georgetown, CJIA hosts several major airlines, including Caribbean Airlines, American Airlines, Copa Airlines, and JetBlue, which offer direct flights from North America, South America, and the Caribbean.

By Sea

While less common, travelers can also access Guyana via cruise ships or private vessels. The main seaport entry is the Port of Georgetown. It's advised to check with your cruise line for specific disembarkation processes.

Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Guyana. We have compiled information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guyana, to help you determine your requirements.

Countries with Visa Exemptions

Citizens of the following countries typically do not require a visa for short visits (up to 90 days):

    • CARICOM Member States
    • United States
    • Canada
    • United Kingdom
    • EU Member States

For a comprehensive list, please visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Visa Application Process

If your country requires a visa, the following steps outline the basic application process:

  1. Check Visa Requirements: Visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guyana’s website to confirm whether you need a visa.
  2. Gather Necessary Documents: Commonly required documents include a valid passport, completed visa application form, passport-sized photographs, proof of accommodation, and travel itinerary.
  3. Submit Your Application: Applications can typically be submitted to the nearest Guyanese embassy or consulate. If none exists in your country, online submissions or mail-in applications are available.
  4. Processing Time: Visa processing times can vary, so please apply well in advance of your intended travel dates.

Here's what you need to consider packing for your trip to Guyana:

  • Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Guyana's climate can be hot and humid, especially along the coast, with dry conditions in the deep savannas. Be prepared for varying temperatures by packing lightweight, breathable clothing.
  • Rain Gear: Heavy rainfalls are common, so bring waterproof gear such as a rain jacket and an umbrella.
  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the intense tropical sun by carrying a high-SPF sunscreen.
  • Bug Repellent: Given Guyana's rich natural environment, mosquitoes can sometimes pose a risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. Make sure to pack an effective insect repellent.
Vaccinations

Travelers are recommended to be up-to-date on routine vaccines and may need additional immunizations such as Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and B, and Typhoid, depending on their travel plans and health history.

COVID-19 Guidelines

Please refer to the latest travel advisories and health guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health, Guyana, for COVID-19 related requirements.

Accommodation

Georgetown offers a range of accommodations to suit every preference and budget. From luxury hotels such as Marriot Hotel Guyana to comfortable guest houses and lodges, you’re sure to find a place that fits your needs.

Transport
  • Taxis: Readily available throughout Georgetown and from CJIA.
  • Car Rentals: Several international and local car rental services operate in the city.
  • Public Transport: Minibuses are a common mode of transport, though it is advisable for international visitors to use taxis for a more straightforward and safer travel experience.

Guyana has a tropical climate with year-round warmth. Average temperatures range from 24°C (75°F) to 31°C (88°F). Light clothing, sunscreen, and an umbrella for occasional showers are essential.

The local currency is the Guyanese Dollar (GYD). While major credit cards are widely accepted, it’s a good idea to carry small amounts of cash for local markets and smaller establishments.

Make the most of your visit by exploring Guyana’s natural beauty and cultural richness. Discover the majestic Kaieteur Falls, immerse yourself in the bustling Stabroek Market, or take a stroll along the scenic Seawall.
